Digital Ash in a Digital Urn (Bright Eyes)
This was one of my first Bright Eyes albums and, man, I feel like it aged like a fine wine. I've been relistening to this album over the last couple weeks and this album still does something to me as a girl who is about to turn 34. What I really like about this album besides the nostalgia is the whole "digital" undertone and the lyrics to these songs are just so...well...Conor Oberst lol. On top of that the album art is so simple and good (I think I remember this print being on shirts back in the day, I remember the Take it Easy (Love Nothing) shirt for sure). The whole deep dive into us being connected yet not connected at all in the digital age really resonates in 2025 and something I think about often. The irony of having all these devices and platforms to stay connected but in so many ways a lot of us are lonelier than ever. I think that this album also brings in a lot of Oberst's personal feelings on death, rebirth, substances, love, and self-image are also additional overtones brought to these songs. It's like, life is a race, but where are we going? This is and will always be one of my favorite Bright Eyes albums and maybe just a general favorite. It's beautifully creative and blunt.
